Introduction
A roofing RFQ that says GI 0.35 x 1000 or PPGI RAL 5012 still leaves the forming grade blank. One mill fills DX51D+Z. Another fills mill G550. A third prints SGCC on the offer and S550GD on the EN 10204 3.1 MTC. Zinc mass can match. Color can match. The rib still splits on the roll-former.
This is a red-flag guide for importers who buy DX51D galvanized coil or G550 galvanized coil for roofing, cladding, gutters, and painted profiles. It is procurement guidance, not a substitute for the ordered edition of EN 10346, ASTM A653, JIS G3302, or AS 1397. Paint fields still live in the PPGI specification guide. Zinc mass still lives in the GI coil purchase-order checklist. Come back here when the mill changes the steel under those fields.
What A Soft-Grade Quote Looks Like On Hard Coil
The first warning is rarely a cracked sample. It is a nickname on a thin coil.
Export desks treat G550, S550GD, SGCH, and full hard as interchangeable stock for 0.30 mm to 0.55 mm roofing. The same desks treat DX51D, SGCC, and ASTM A653 CS as the default when the buyer did not name a yield. Those two families do not share a job. One is specified to bend. The other is specified to stay at 550 MPa class after forming.

DX51D And G550 Are Different Jobs, Not Nicknames
DX51D+Z (EN 10346) is steel for cold forming: bending and profiling. SGCC (JIS G3302) and ASTM A653 CS Type B sit in the same commercial-forming conversation. Mills quote them for lock-seam trays, gutters, ducts, and painted profiles that take a tight radius. Yield is not the sales number. Elongation is.
G550 in mill talk is a 550 MPa yield class. The nearest named families on Chinese export coils are S550GD (EN 10346), ASTM A653 SS Grade 80, and, in some mill cards, an AS 1397 G550 nickname. Those coils are sold for thin high-rib roofing and structural cladding. They spring back. They do not stretch like DX51D.
Do not treat DX51D, SGCC, S550GD, and mill G550 as 100% identical. They are practical sourcing families only after the drawing names the job.

Chemistry is secondary on this decision, and mill heats vary. Typical EN 10346 maxima that buyers still freeze when a lab later argues the melt:

Read those as standard maxima to confirm against the ordered edition, not as a heat you already bought. The forming failure is mechanical.
Red Flags On The Mill Offer And The MTC
Trade-floor pattern: the PI says DX51D+Z, Z120, 0.35 x 1000, RAL 5012. The coil tag says G550. The MTC yield column reads 580 MPa. Painting already happened. The claim then argues color, because color is what the buyer photographed.
Check these before anyone books the coating line.
- Offer grade string vs PO grade string. DX51D+Z is not S550GD+Z. SGCC is not mill G550.
- MTC mechanical table: yield, tensile, elongation, and the standard printed in the header. A zinc-mass line without elongation is incomplete on a forming order.
- Hardness talk. “Full hard” and SGCH on a DX51D inquiry is the same family of problem as G550.
- Thickness basis. 0.35 mm on G550 roofing is often total coated product. 0.35 mm on DX51D can be base metal. The rib height changes.
- Coil ID 508 mm or 610 mm, max coil weight, and whether the strip will be slit. Hard coil and soft coil do not share one uncoiler setup without a note.

If the mill says the two grades are equivalent because both are galvanized, ask for the yield and A80 (or A50) numbers on the same page as the zinc class. Equivalence talk without those numbers is a commercial convenience.
How The Swap Shows Up After Roll Forming
G550 against a DX51D lock-seam or standing-seam radius shows up as paint cracks, zinc cracks, and split ribs at the smallest bend. The coil looked fine in the warehouse. The profile line is where the missing elongation appears.
DX51D against a G550 high-rib or cyclone drawing shows up later: oil-canning, rib collapse, or a fabricator who cannot hold cover width because the strip yields too early. Wind-load tables that assumed 550 MPa class steel do not apply.
Neither failure is a packing claim. Both are grade claims. Third-party PSI that only checks thickness, zinc, and RAL will miss them. Tell SGS, BV, or TUV to read the MTC grade string and the mechanical table against the PO before the coil is wrapped.
Dimensional notes that belong on the same hold:
- Thickness tolerance on thin GI / PPGI is often discussed in a ±0.02 mm to ±0.05 mm commercial band; write the basis (base metal or total product).
- Width 600-1250 mm is common for roofing; state mill edge or slit edge.
- Coil weight 3-8 MT is common on 0.35 mm; hard G550 coils still need the same VCI and edge-guard package as soft DX51D, because white rust does not care about yield.
PPGI Does Not Hide The Substrate Grade
Paint does not rewrite EN 10346. A PE, SMP, HDP, or PVDF topcoat can sit on DX51D+Z or on S550GD+Z. The RAL number is a color target. The forming grade is still the steel.
On PPGI, the swap is more expensive because the coil is already the finished face. Recoating a cracked rib is not a mill touch-up. Freeze the substrate grade on the PPGI line with the same severity as zinc mass and film build.
Copy onto the PPGI block:
- Substrate standard and grade: DX51D+Z or S550GD+Z / mill G550, not “PPGI roofing”
- Zinc class: Z80, Z120, Z180, or Z275 as the project names
- Paint family and film build, reverse side, gloss, RAL or master sample
- Mechanical table required on the EN 10204 3.1 MTC (yield, tensile, elongation)
- Forming route: lock-seam, corrugation pitch, or high rib, plus minimum inside radius if the fabricator has one
Bare GI uses the same grade freeze without the paint rows. If the warehouse will paint after forming, order DX51D (or the named forming grade) as GI, not as a random leftover G550 coil that “can be painted.”
Hold Rules Before The Coil Is Painted Or Loaded
Hold at mill, not at the destination port, when any of these is true.
- The PO prints DX51D / SGCC / CS and the offer, stencil, or MTC prints G550 / S550GD / SS Grade 80 / SGCH / full hard.
- The PO prints G550 / S550GD and the MTC yield is a commercial DX51D band with no 550 MPa class result.
- Elongation is blank on a forming order, or yield is blank on a 550 MPa order.
- PPGI already has film, and the only matching field is RAL.
- The mill asks to dual-stamp DX51D and G550 on one certificate.
Release only when the MTC heat number matches the coil ID, the grade string matches the PO, and packing is seaworthy: VCI paper, waterproof film, metal edge guards, and 3 radial plus 4 circumferential straps. Eye-to-sky versus eye-to-wall is a loading choice. It does not repair a wrong yield class. A 20GP still lands near 25-27 MT; do not overfill hard thin coil to chase that number.

Conclusion
On GI and PPGI roofing coil, forming grade is a hold point, same as zinc mass. DX51D bends. G550 holds 550 MPa class. A mill that fills one from the other is not doing you a favor on price. Freeze the standard string, yield, tensile, and elongation on the RFQ, then match those four fields on the EN 10204 3.1 MTC before the strip is painted or stuffed.
