304 stainless steel: coil, sheet and surface finish

Choose coil for slitting and forming, or sheet for cut-size fabrication. Specify the grade, dimensions and finish together so the material suits your equipment and finished part.

304 stainless steel: coil, sheet and surface finish
Product optionApplicationOrder details
304 grade and product standardCold rolled flat stainless for general fabrication and distribution.Request 304 explicitly under the governing product standard, such as ASTM A240 or EN 10088-2. 304L is a separate grade; substitutions or dual certification require review of the order and MTC.
Coil or cut sheetCoil feeds slitting and forming lines; cut sheet requires a finished length.Give thickness, width, tolerance and edge condition. For sheet add length; for coil add ID and maximum unit weight.
2B, BA or polished finishSelect the finish for appearance, fabrication and cleaning requirements.State finish, protective film and acceptance criteria. For polished material include direction and the approved sample when needed.

304 and 304L

304 is an austenitic stainless grade used in general fabrication. 304L has a lower carbon limit and is a separate grade. Specify the designation and governing product standard required by your drawing, such as ASTM A240 or EN 10088-2. Any substitution or dual certification must be checked against the order requirements and mill test certificate.

Service conditions also matter. Chloride exposure, coastal conditions or chemical cleaning may require a different material selection. Include the application when seeking a grade recommendation.

Coil, sheet and finish

Choose coil for slitting and forming lines, or sheet for finished cut sizes. Provide thickness, width and tolerances; for sheet add length, and for coil add inside diameter and maximum unit weight.

State 2B, BA or the required polished finish. For polished surfaces, include direction and the approved sample where needed. Specify protective film, edge condition and packing requirements for fabrication and transport.

Request a quotation

Send your grade, coil or sheet form, dimensions, finish and quantity. Add the destination port and attach a drawing or purchase specification if available. Availability, minimum order and lead time are confirmed for your requested specification in the quotation.

  • 304 grade and required product standard; any alternative must be separately approved
  • Coil or sheet, thickness, width and tolerance; sheet length when applicable
  • 2B, BA or polished finish and protective film requirements
  • Quantity in tonnes, destination port and required delivery date
  • Coil ID and maximum weight, or sheet packing requirements
  • Required MTC and inspection scope

Inspection documents

Match heat identification, grade and test results to the mill test certificate. Agree dimensional and surface checks, together with any additional inspection required by the purchase specification.

Overview

Cold rolled stainless coil and sheet for forming, sheet-metal fabrication and distribution. For a 304 order, specify the grade, thickness, width and surface finish together with the required coil or sheet form.

Product scope

  • Grade, standard and delivery condition specified for each order
  • Product form, finish and surface protection matched to the buyer’s processing requirements

Applications

  • Formed and fabricated sheet-metal components selected by grade and finish
  • Panels, equipment enclosures and decorative components with agreed surface acceptance
  • Cutting and distribution to the buyer’s material and dimensional specification

Surface options

  • Specify 2B or BA by standard designation and agreed sample
  • Define polishing direction and surface acceptance for No.4
  • Agree protective-film compatibility, storage and removal conditions

Processing & form

  • Specify slit width, tolerances and edge condition
  • Define cut-sheet length, flatness and squareness
  • Review forming and welding requirements against the drawing and grade
  • Protect the visible face and prevent carbon-steel contamination during handling

Packing, inspection & delivery documents

Include packing, material certificate and inspection requirements so costs and delivery arrangements can be reviewed together.

Packing & delivery

Export packing options
  • Moisture protection appropriate to transport and storage
  • Surface and edge protection against abrasion and impact
  • Protective film, if ordered, with agreed compatibility and removal conditions

FAQ

FAQ

Can 304 and 304L be substituted or dual-certified?

304 and 304L have different requirements. Check composition, properties, product standard and the inspection certificate against the order. Dual certification must satisfy both sets of requirements; a commercial name does not establish compliance. Any substitution requires buyer approval.

How should I specify 2B, BA and No.4 finishes?

State the finish, visible face and acceptance criteria. For polished surfaces, add polishing direction, an agreed sample and roughness where required. Abrasive grit alone does not guarantee identical appearance or roughness. Agree protective film and removal conditions for processing and storage.

What changes between a coil and a sheet enquiry?

For coil, provide inside diameter, maximum unit weight, width and edge requirements to suit your line. For sheet, add length, flatness, squareness and cutting requirements. Both need thickness, tolerances, grade, finish, quantity, destination and required documents.

What should accompany a cold rolled stainless RFQ?

Send the grade, standard, coil or sheet form, dimensions, finish, quantity, application, destination port and required inspection documents. Drawings and acceptance samples help align the quotation with the finished part.
