Overview
A hot rolled alloy steel bar order needs more than a grade name and nominal diameter. Specify the governing product standard and edition, exact grade, diameter, length and tolerances. State the delivery condition separately, such as an ordered heat-treatment condition, with the required hardness or mechanical properties and test basis. References to 40Cr, 42CrMo or 4140 do not establish cross-standard equivalence.
For machining or forging stock, describe the subsequent operation and finished-part requirements. Allow for machining stock, straightness, surface discontinuities and any decarburization limits where relevant. Specify whether the bar is required with its rolled surface or with additional surface preparation; include that work in the quotation scope. Agree heat traceability, sampling, inspection documents, packing and destination. Final suitability for shafts, fasteners or loaded parts depends on the approved grade, condition and part design.
